The header tags *h1* through *h6* are very important in partitioning off content in sections on your website , the importance to search engines is more with *h1* tags and less as you get up to *h6*. One of the most important factors of search engine optimization is your keyword density within your pages , typically you would want a keyword density of between 4% - 8% which means if your site is about marketing you would want every 4-8 words out of 100 to be the word marketing , so your site shows it is relevant to your description,title and keywords.
Doing research on your competition is a great way to see where you are at in terms of progress , you can also find out their keyword density and adjust so your keyword density holds more weight. If your competitors have 40 backlinks and a keyword density of 5% you want to aim for 41 backlinks and a keyword density higher then 5% and you should be able to beat out your competition.
